Locations
As an MSE student, you will spend your time on two main sites: the Garching-Forschungszentrum Campus and, depending on your semester, the Garching-Hochbrück Campus. To help you find your way around, we have compiled all essential information for you below.
Garching-Forschungszentrum
The Garching-Forschungszentrum (often simply called Campus Garching) is one of the largest and most important locations of the Technical University of Munich. It is situated north of Munich in the town of Garching and is directly connected to the Munich public transport network via the U6 subway line (station: Garching-Forschungszentrum).
The campus hosts numerous faculties, research institutes, and major scientific facilities, including internationally renowned institutions such as several Max Planck Society institutes, the ESO (European Southern Observatory), and a wide range of TUM laboratories and research centers.
Important for first-year students:
- Many lectures, exercise sessions, tutorials, practical courses, and laboratory classes take place here — especially during the early semesters.
- The campus also offers a canteen, cafés, study rooms, libraries, and convenient bus and cycling connections across the site.
- The campus is large, modern, and strongly research-oriented — you will encounter students, doctoral researchers, and scientists from all over the world.
The Quantum
The “Quantum” is an instructional building rented by the Technical University of Munich. It is located in the industrial area of Garching-Hochbrück, in close proximity to the Garching research campus. This facility primarily hosts lectures, central exercise sessions, and tutorials for the higher semesters.
It serves as an additional teaching location to accommodate the high demand for space on the Garching campus and is easily accessible via the U6 subway line (station: Garching-Hochbrück).
Makerspace
The Makerspace is a large and exceptionally well-equipped workshop located on the Garching-Forschungszentrum Campus. It offers a wide range of facilities, including machining, metalworking, woodworking, textile processing, and electronics workspaces. You will also find 3D printers, laser cutters, and waterjet cutters available for use.
More detailed information about the Makerspace facilities can be found here.
